“Divorcing Ba’al: The Sex of Ownership in Jewish Marriage”

This reading is really interesting in regards to Jewish marriage. I have known for awhile that there are specific “laws” regarding marriage for each religion. For my own religion, I don’t even fully understand the marriage process, so I surely was unaware of the specifics for Judaism. I find some of the overlaps really fascinating regarding religious marriage rules. When the reading said about a child being had after divorce with a new spouse classifying the child as a bastard, I thought that was very extreme. The popular phrasing of divorce as a negotiation really stuck out to me; it makes it sound more like a business matter rather than a relationship of intimacy in my opinion. The Torah telling a man to send his spouse away if she is distasteful is so disrespectful. To me, there is absolutely no sense of morality behind that reasoning. I also found the gender role differences in Jewish marriage very unfortunate, referring to the husband as a homeowner and decision maker, while his wife is unstable and displaced. The ways to describe both husband and wife are very wrong to me. Obviously the way women are referred to is completely degrading, but I also think that the way men are described is very shallow.
